This appears to be a transmission "bell housing" that was being placed on the molding line at the drag set- off. As it moved down the line before being poured, a cope or top of the mold is added and "clamps" are applied to prevent the halves from separating during pouring. If they did a "run out" would occur causing a loss of molten iron rendering a partial filled mold and a scrap casting.
